While the WNBA has made a name for itself alongside the NBA, the NFL’s closest counterpart for women, the WFA, hasn't quite received the fanfare it deserves! AWSN wants to change that because this league is top tier and it's the WFA’s time to shine!

The Women's Football Alliance (WFA) stands as the premier women's professional tackle football league globally, featuring teams in over 60 U.S. cities and extending its reach to leagues in eight countries worldwide. Established in 2009, the WFA has been instrumental in advancing women's participation in American football, providing a platform for athletes to compete at the highest level.

History and Growth

Since its inception, the WFA has experienced significant growth, both in the number of teams and the level of competition. The league's unique business model facilitated the emergence of new teams across the nation, reducing travel demands while enhancing national exposure for women's football. This strategy proved effective, and within two years, the WFA became the largest women's tackle football league worldwide, encompassing some of the most successful and enduring franchises in the sport's history.

The WFA has achieved several milestones that underscore its commitment to elevating women's football:

  • National Championships in NFL Stadiums: It was the first women's football league to host a National Championship in an NFL stadium, providing players with an unparalleled professional experience.

  • Broadcast Agreements: The league secured a multiyear television network deal with ESPN, bringing women's football to a broader audience and enhancing the sport's visibility.

  • Pro Football Hall of Fame Recognition: WFA MVP jerseys have been displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, acknowledging the exceptional talent within the league.

  • NFL Alumni Partnership: The WFA was the first women's league to partner with the NFL Alumni, fostering a supportive relationship with the broader football community.

Additionally, over 30 veteran WFA players have secured coaching and scouting positions in the NFL, including trailblazers like Katie Sowers, the first female to coach in a Super Bowl, and Jennifer King, the first African American female coach in the NFL.

Rules of Play

The WFA adheres to NCAA rules with specific modifications to suit the league's structure:

  • Officiating Crew: Games are officiated by a crew consisting of five field officials and one clock operator, utilizing the National Federation (High School) 5-person mechanics manual.

  • Equipment: Players have the option to use tinted and clear eye shields as part of their gear.

  • Blocking Regulations: Cut blocking is prohibited anywhere on the field, promoting player safety.

These adaptations ensure a competitive and safe environment for all participants.

Star Players and Icons

The WFA has been home to numerous talented athletes who have significantly contributed to the league's prominence:

  • Katie Sowers: A former WFA player who made history as the first female and openly gay coach to participate in a Super Bowl, serving as an offensive assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
