Despite major progress in women’s football, women remain significantly

underrepresented in elite-level coaching teams. Elitfotboll Dam now presents the

Elite Coaching Pathways Report 2024 – an in-depth study exploring the reasons

behind this imbalance and what it takes to encourage more women to enter – and

stay – in the profession.

The report is part of the Elite Coaching Pathways initiative, aimed at increasing the

number of women in elite coaching roles. The initiative is driven by Elitfotboll Dam in

collaboration with Akea, Sundström Safety, and EPOS. The goal is to foster long-

term change, improve talent development, and contribute to a more inclusive elite

football environment.

– To drive real change, we must understand the structures that shape the reality

today. This report clearly outlines the barriers women face – but also highlights the

keys to meaningful progress. It’s an important step in our ongoing efforts to build a

more inclusive and sustainable elite football, says Linn Eriksson, Sustainability and

Partnership Coordinator at Elitfotboll Dam.

Four key factors for change:

The report is based on both qualitative and quantitative data, and examines gender

distribution, education levels, recruitment practices, and working conditions within the

coaching and medical teams of OBOS Damallsvenskan and Elitettan.

 Safe and gender-balanced coaching teams

 More visible female role models

 Clear roles and mutual respect within teams

 Entry-level opportunities in roles without licensing requirements

Global evidence supports the need for change

Research shows a strong link between female head coaches and sporting success in

international women’s football. 16 of the last 18 championship-winning teams have

had a female head coach.

A tool for change

The report serves as a tool for both clubs and federations to take a more strategic

approach to recruitment, education, and creating supportive environments – and is a

central part of Elitfotboll Dam’s commitment to a more sustainable and equal elite

football ecosystem.
