Active City Arena 2025 at Heiligengeistfeld in May and June
The multifunctional arena will be the central meeting point for Hamburg sports fans for the
fourth time this early summer. Up to 1,200 spectators will be able to experience top-level
sport from May 23 to June 9. Featuring world-class Beachvolleyball (Queen & King of the
Court and German Beach Tour) and other exciting sport events, the arena will once again be
located on Heiligengeistfeld right next of the St. Pauli subway station.
What is Queen & King of the Court?
Queen & King of the Court is a fresh and dynamic format in beach volleyball. Unlike
traditional beach volleyball, Queen & King of the Court features fast-paced rounds with
rotating teams, creating non-stop action and excitement. Up to five teams compete
simultaneously in thrilling 15-minute knockout rounds, aiming to score the most points and
claim the crown. The event is perfect for both young and old, appealing to beach volleyball
enthusiasts as well as fans of sport and entertainment alike.
Five years of Queen & King of the Court in Hamburg
The city of Hamburg has developed into one of the world’s leading international beach
volleyball destinations. The city first hosted a Queen & King of the Court tournament in 2021
at the iconic Rothenbaum Stadium. That year, Germany’s volleyball legend Laura Ludwig
and Switzerland’s Anouk Vergé-Dépré were crowned Queens, while Poland’s Piotr Kantor
and Bartosz Łosiak claimed the King’s title. For Laura Ludwig, this was one of many Queen
& King of the Court tournaments in her career, including her recent victory in Utrecht.

Global stage at Heiligengeistfeld
In 2022, the event moved to the Active City Arena on Heiligengeistfeld, which has since
become its annual venue. German stars like Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler have excelled
here, with the team claiming the Hamburg title in 2024 and additional wins in Doha and
Luxembourg in 2023.
London Olympic Gold Medalist Julius Brink is excited to see the event return for a fifth time.
Hamburg is undoubtedly the capital of beach volleyball in Germany. It is an essential event
on our calendar and a privilege to host the Queen & King of the Court, showcasing so
many international top players.
Top athletes from around the world have competed in Hamburg, including world and
Olympic champions. For example, the American world champions Hughes/Cheng won the
2024 Hamburg title, and the legendary Norwegian duo Mol/Sørum were the 2023 champions
in Hamburg. The 2025 edition promises another unforgettable lineup featuring both
international volleyball legends and top German players.
